So... it's getting late. . .and in an attempt to procrastinate I decided to "google image" myself... which I feel everyone should do at least once ... you never know what comes up when you google your name... WITH an image... well I am going to share with you the results...

Take a look... its my claim to fame... I made the front page of the Napa Valley Register a couple years ago (I had forgotten about this). I attended what is annually known in Napa, CA as the Mustachio Bashio on the day after Thanksgiving (every year). It is an extremely fun fundraiser for UCSF's Children's Hospital... It was an unbelievabe event for a good cause. Every male has a mustache (a la Tom Selleck era) and every female must be dressed a la 80's.. or basically as crazy as ever...

so here's the pic... you'll have to google me to see the whole article...

Britainy's Birthday... Sheila's Design...

Last week was one of my most closest and dearest friend's birthday. Instead of dressing like Jem & the Holograms (like last years festivities).. we classed it up a bit more this year with a dinner party (cocktail attire I might add)... only it wasn't just any party... it was planned and executed perfectly from the minute the "driver" picked every girl up to the minute we were safely dropped back home...and all this to the thanks of one spectacular girl!

My amazingly talented friend Sheila planned the entire dinner party from the invitations to the gorgeous centerpieces even to the meal. All of which she made herself. Wait till you see the pics below... her centerpieces are some of the best I've ever seen.

Keep your eye out for this girl ... she'll be rocking all our worlds soon. I'll let you know when her website is up and running... it's in the works right now!!

And Brit... you looked amazing. Like I said that night... I truely am excited from the bottom of my heart for what this year has in store for you... I can't wait see what unfolds (I'll hold the tears back this time)!!

A beautiful sunset...

A couple years ago I was taking the ferry back across the Straights of Mackinac and for once decided to ride on the top (like a tourist...aka fudgie)... I saw the most beautiful and amazing sunset just behind the bridge.

Well, I'm glad to know that others will be able to see this sunset too... Pure Michigan (a wonderful new campaign for tourism in MI) just launched their Mackinac site... and decided to feature this image of mine... take a look...

So, I had to share with you a lovely email I just got today from one of last year's brides... I just love it when photos make people happy... yeah!!!

Hi Andrejka, I'm so excited to tell you thank you for the album! I just opened it and looked at it literally 5 minutes ago. It is so gorgeous and beyond anything I could have expected. It's perfect! The pictures are so clear and arranged so perfectly. It took me back to our wedding day and made me feel everything all over again. Thank you, thank you, thank you! What a special surprise the three little brag books were too! They are perfect and I can't wait to give one to my mom and to Pete's mom and of course keep one for myself :) Thank you again from the bottom of my heart. Take care and keep in touch! Stephanie P.S. BIG NEWS: A new home for Andrejka Photography...

Over the past few weeks I've been tossing around the idea of finding a new office space... a place that is different...and fun, ... a great place to work and play . . and share with clients too. Well... the perfect opportunity fell into my lap.

Viva Space... It's exactly what I was looking for. A space on the more creative side then the corporate side... a place where I can be inspired and productive. A place I can shoot, a place I can type, and a place I can escape into my world of photos (yet not be a hermit)!!

Viva Space has got a hip urban funky feel ... yet only blocks away from the relaxed laid back California beaches. I'll be sharing this open gallery/office with 4 other talented artists (fashion designer: Denice Roe, painter: Kelly Ann Campbell, web designer: Ryan Gantz, and the brains behind this "factory": Ulrike Kerber owner of Viva Design).

I can't wait to share this with everyone and watch how my business can flourish and grow along sinde other creative types!! What a fun new adventure...

Little Luxuries of Mackinac Island...

I've had a couple people ask me about this gem of a store that will be opening this May on Mackinac. YES... it will be open for the season ... and the website is in the works.

Just wait!!!... I've been in cahoots with the owner about some really really cool things for brides, guests, and basically anyone looking for super fun high-end luxury gifts of all shapes and sizes...(confused yet... you'll see... wink wink).

Also, I'll be exclusively selling some great high-end postcards and maybe even greeting cards here to.

Overcoming ridiculous fears... with an Italian Dinner!

First off I am not afraid of Italian dinners... not even close... BUT... many people would never guess it but I am COMPLETELY intimidated by any social gathering which involves meeting new people ... (surprising since I shoot weddings for a living)

Well, last night I ignored this little fear and went to my dear friend's house for a wonderful Italian potluck dinner... I walked into a room full of new faces...YIKES! Took a deep breath ... and within minutes we were all laughing and bonding over a meal brought together by each of us (gotta love potlucks)... as a side note one guest was from MI and knew of the "island"...phew something I can always talk about.

Plus it always inspires me to be around people who have taken the leap, followed their passions, and started their own businesses... my friend Gabe is an amazing graphic designer who has built a successful business from the ground up... check out Insights Design To Gabe and everyone else last night, thanks again for a great dinner, encouragement, and inspiration!

May you all realize your ridiculous fears... and face them . .. sometimes they can turn out to be fun.

So... this morning I wandered into Borders to look for Grace Ormonde Wedding Style Magazine.. and this is what I saw...
My goodness... when did the newstands all of a sudden become flooded with Bridal Magazines... not that I'm complaining... I LOVE wedding magazines (as I should...).. but a bride must be a little afraid (although EXCITED) every time she comes near the rack... or at least her fiance should be as she walks to the checkout with EIGHTEEN magazines to peruse... talk about making your head spin...

Jane & Glen are married!!

This past weekend I was so touched and honored to be a part of a very special ceremony between Jane & Glen. They asked that I meet them in Portland for the beautiful wedding.

This couple exudes joy, happiness, laughter and love to the extreme. Glen's eyes sparkled everytime he stole a little side glance at his new bride and Jane laughed with the biggest smile I've ever seen. It was truly an evening full of touching moments and belly laughs!!

Now, I've been to quite a few weddings and I must say that NEVER have I been to one that had EVERY SINGLE person dancing... sure usually you've got the small kids sliding across the dancefloor, the college friends dancing to LoveShack, the parents slowly dancing in the corner, and maybe once in awhile the grandparents will take their turn too... but THIS was something else, the bride's aunt was being swirled around the dancfloor by the bestman as both sets of parents boogied down with the couple, everyone else boogied in a circle... even the amazing caterers from Fresh Palate Cafe were dragged out there. I'm telling you... not a single person was sitting down (no exaggeration)... I was truly impressed!!

... and did I mention the whole affair was planned and executed in a month... without missing a single detail... it was a beautiful and elegant evening from beginning to end.

Jane & Glen... You two warm my heart every time I see you... thank you so much for inviting me to be a part of your special day!

A great gift for winery weddings

The wedding I shot this weekend had the cutest little gifts for each guest. We were at Zenith Winery outside Portland... so what perfect gift then wine bottle stoppers... and the glass was hand etched by a relative... and what a beautiful presentation (Everyone loves opening a present)Another GREAT option for winery gifts, is a local Santa Barbara company, Santa Barbara Wine Corks and you don't just have to be from SB, Greg will work with people worldwide. I met the owner Greg Orlando at the SB Sunday Artwalk a few weeks ago and was so impressed that I had to write about it. In fact I already have a shop owner talking with him back on Mackinac.

10,000 wedding photographers in 1 hotel for 1 conference from all over the world...

How could one not be blown away by this!!

I was so thrilled (and nervous) to attend my first WPPI... it was all I had imagined... and WAY more. The people I met were amazing, helpful, and supportive beyond expectation. Everyone of us were there for the same reason, to support and celebrate each other in an industry we love!!

Too much entered my little brain this weekend to even try and filter it for you. Just know that I am so stoked, inspired, and ready to take my photography, my clients, and my passion to a whole new level.

I am so excited to be attending my first WPPI (Wedding and Portrait Photographers International) convention... I just know it is going to blow my mind to be surrounded by my peers and my mentors ... and all the latest and greatest "toys" in the industry!!

Not only am I going to be attending the convention . . . BUT I am also taking a "party of 4" workshop with the awesome Mike Larson . .. an all day seminar with only 4 people .. super intensive and super customized... . yippee

Can't wait to tell you all about it...

Kali & Carey's Engagement...

A couple of days ago I was thrilled to meet up with Kali & Carey to photograph their engagement pictures. I will be shooting their wedding in May . .. and I can't wait.

As I was saying yesterday, I love to shoot engagement pictures. They are wonderful opportunities to get to know my couples, have fun, and figure out how to help them relax in front of the camera before the big day.

Kali and Carey were no exception. We laughed and laughed. It was hard to miss the way they looked at each other. Out of nowhere Carey would just pick Kali up and hold her tight. I love it when I see such joy between two people. To see more pics, take a look at the slide show below.

On the other side of the camera...

I figured since I just experimented with my hair (a first . . . almost blonde .. . yikes) and my mother (who is across the country) is dying to see what it looks like... it was time for me to step in front of the camera.

Every year I force myself from behind the lens to step in front of it for once. It really helps me remember what it's like to have a camera in your face. . .and how flippin' uncomfortable it can be . . . I don't like having my picture taken to begin with much less doing it with "experimental" hair... (and as every girl knows ... one's hair can say a lot.... and I am not quite sure what mine is saying right now) ... Okay enough about the hair...

I think often times photographers forget what its like to be the subject of a photo shoot. When your photographing brides and grooms who aren't used to being surrounded by the paparazzi its important to step into THEIR shoes once and a while. . . . Every time I do this (even if its only for a few minutes) it reminds me how important it is to make my couples and clients feel comfortable with me and almost forget that there's even a camera there. I try to chat with them, relax, put them in a general pose then let them be free and natural... its really up to me to catch the moment. . .not to create it!!

This is one reason I think an Engagement Shoot is important its kind of like a "practice run" before the big day... I get to hangout with my couple, without any nerves or schedule... its probably one of my favorite things to shoot!

So when looking at photographers. ... think about asking them how they handle formal shots, how they postion their subjects. . .and most importantly... TALK with them .. decide if you like their personality and if you want to hang out with them your entire wedding day (since you will be spending more time with your photographer than with anyone else)!!!

It was so wonderful, we hadn't been together to hear Spearhead in years... and the last time was a music festival a long time ago...

This one is AWESOME for all things destination (my good photographer friend Nate Thompson told me about this forum) . .. I just joined and am really excited to start exploring it more. I know it has great reference information having to do with Trash the Dress, and destinations around the world. Its a wonderful place to talk with other brides... and not be bothered by vendors (they have very strict rules about vendor participation... which I love... I'm not much of a sales girl)

and THIS one is awesome for all things Mackinac Wedding style. Its a great reference for planning an island wedding, have questions answered directly from professionals, and see who, what where, and especially WHY things are done the way they are on the island... Candice & Michael... a Hawaiian Celebration

In the middle of this cold winter (okay chilly in Santa Barbara)... I thought I would talk about Hawaii... or to be exact Candice and Michael's amazing wedding in Kailua this past year (specifically at the beautiful Kualoa Ranch)

Not only was the weather as warm and sunny as can be but so was the love in their eyes. There was such warmth and joy between these two that you would have to blind to have missed it. The way that Candice would look up at Michael and the way that Michael smiled as he first saw her at the end of the aisle... the memory of this day can keep anyone warm this winter... as I'm sure it does for everyone who was there...

This was an espeically magical ceremony in that Michael's sister Alice, an amazing minister, had everyone (herself included) in tears as she married her little brother.

To my dear dear friends. . . I'm so happy for where life has taken you in the past year and am so thankful that I was able to share this "beautiful day" with you and your families.

PUG meeting .. at my place ... I better clean!!

Last week I was so excited that Kacie Jean asked me to host the first Pictage User Group (PUG) meeting of 2009. It was so much fun... I love hosting parties and to be able to have 20 fellow photographers gather at my home was wonderful... but even more great was the amazing speaker Kacie arranged.

Mike Larson, a world renowned destination wedding photographer, gave such a great lecture. We all walked away knowing more about how to run a business, stay happy, and live a full life! I always love these meetings its a wonderful time to gather with peers talk about our passions and share our experiences.

The History before us...

I usually stray away from all "taboo" topics religion, politics, etc.. (in my opinion... as a wedding photographer. . .it really doesn't matter LOVE is LOVE) but... I couldn't help on a day like today to touch upon what is happening around us.

Wow, what a powerful moment in time we are all witnessing right now! With today being Martin Luther King Jr ... a day to honor a man who had a vision for the country and the world beyond the vision that surrounded him . . . and now tomorrow a day that will see the swearing in of our 44th president, Barak Obama, using the same bible as Abraham Lincoln. These three men represent eyes that see beyond the world in front of them to a place where we can be.

No matter what your political or personal views may be THIS IS HISTORY... taking place ... right now! How often do we know we are experiencing a moment in time that will be taught in the classrooms while it is happening.

It is an amazing time to be alive!

May we all be inspired by the visions in our hearts and reach for our dreams that are still to be discovered.

Just like the movies...

Last night I witnessed the most unique, creative and thoughtful proposal ever...

Brent (an amazing filmmaker) has been working for months to organize the perfect proposal for Polly. He rented a theater, invited their closest family and friends under the guise of a going away party (Polly is headed to Africa for 6 weeks), and then here's the kicker... he created his own personal movie all about how to propose to Polly fully cast with the people closest in their lives.

It started with what looked like a documentary about Africa... then next thing you see is Brent on screen with all his buddies at the bar giving him the worst advice. It was hilariously funny... and perfectly them. Polly had no idea . . .and was definitely shocked!

After the film was finished he pulled her in front and got down on one knee.... AMAZING!!!

and after all that, at the "real" going away/engagement party, all he kept saying was "I can't believe she said yes... I can't believe she is going to be my wife..." ... how sweet is that, was there really any doubt...

Brent has definitely set a high precedent for all men to follow... and Polly truly deserves it!!

I guess I don't just cry at weddings. . .

Dog movies get me too...

Well, to be honest I knew this already about myself. All movies having anything to do with animals always make me cry... but I thought just maybe because this one was a comedy I could make it through . . . nope... the tears were a flowin'... but it was great!!

I was lucky enough to attend the "Hotel for Dogs" Premiere last night in LA. It was so much fun. And I can't wait to send my niece and nephew their little surprises. I had the star of the film (Jake T. Austin) sign little bags for them . . . I hope they flip and think Aunt Andrejka is the best!!! ... If that's what it takes...

SO... needless to say... take all your kids, nieces, nephews, cousins, neighbors, . . . and yourself to see this movie this weekend. In a world filled with drama this little 90 minute escape will make you laugh, cry, and feel good.

The French Paradox Party

My dearest and best friend Gianna celebrated her birthday this past weekend with the most amazing, unique and of course fun party idea, The French Paradox. This idea is based on the question of why the French are so thin yet they eat the richest, most delicious food (bread, cheese, butter, chocolate, etc). Well, one theory is because of the delicious organic wine that is grown in that country (which is the idea that us girls decided was the best. . . not the smaller portions, fresh produce, active lifestyle, etc).

Sunday night, 10 of us girls joined together to celebrate Gianna... she had arranged for an amazing French chef, Gael Lecolley (Your Chef Network), to not only cook us a mouthwatering meal but also TEACH us how to make it. While, G's amazing husband acted as our Sommelier. With each course our glasses were full with perfectly matched wine and champagne.

G, thank you so much for such an amazing evening of friendship, laughter paired perfectly with food and wine! May this year bring you happiness and joy beyond all your dreams (look below for the slide show)

The last of my winter holiday... and the end of 2008

I am now adjusted to being back home in California after two weeks in Michigan in the freezing cold (it's not hard to adjust when yesterday morning I was up running around in a tank top in the sun surrounded by palm trees and the smell of the ocean).

I must say I was quite impressed with my ability to adjust (granted my Michigan peeps who witnessed me shivering non stop would probably disagree). By the end of my trip I was finally able to brave the weather on the back of a snowmobile and photograph the island.

Here are just a few pics shot the last day of 2008 (and a few of me... proof that I really did do it--thanks Mary).

I feel so blessed that I can call two places my home Santa Barbara and Mackinac Island... two opposites that I love so dearly and could never replace one with the other.

May this next year find you feeling blessed around every corner!

Yesterday was quite an adventure to Mackinac Island ... it started off quite normal . .. clear road and even some sunshine for the first 3 hours . . then things changed... after stopping off to have lunch with a friend from Bella e Dolce (amazing wedding cakes in Northern Michigan)... the weather did a 180
Now this California girl does not know how to drive in snow anymore, so after white-knuckling across a very windy Mackinac Bridge and making it safely onto the boat I could finally relax . . . almost there... maybe

All of a sudden the boat half way across the lake stops... imagine Titanic... there we were stuck in the ice in the middle of the straights. I have to admit it was kind of cool... and I got amazing photographs.and we made it....

Merry Christmas from Cleveland...

I just finished a busy but wonderful 48 hours in Cleveland visiting with my very large, very loving Slovenian family. Everyone here is a person of their own, we all have different passions, different lifestyles, and come from different areas. . . but the one thing that seems to bond us all together is a true sense of family: anyone is welcome whether you are related by blood, by marriage, or simply because you live next door and have no where else to be.

Every year I travel across the country because it is worth it... every bit of travel hassle, freezing weather and lack of sleep, ... imagine 50 people under one roof for one reason. Tons of kids running around, food beyond explanation, and then my favorite part . . .THE EXCHANGE... 20 grown adults fighting over a pile of presents... stealing, bribing . . no rules allowed... in the end . . .tons of laughter. . . a lot of wrapping paper thrown around... and ultimately it really isn't about the gift but how you acquired it and played the game.

The holidays are the only time that I get to be with the BIG family... from my amazing cousin Jess who, this year, broke her own record and baked FOURTEEN different types of holiday cookies, to my many crazy uncles, aunts, cousins, second cousins (and so on), and of course no Eastern European holiday is complete without an unbelievable amount of sausage (Polish, Sicilian, and Slovenian . . .but we all know the Slovenian Klobasa is the best).
One of the most important and special moments of my holiday is the time I get to spend with my grandmother... my beautiful, amazing, and unbelievable Stara Mama . . . age 104 . . .yes that's right one hundred and four years young. . . and as strong and capable as ever!! She still walks to church every day!!

It is a time like this, after being with my family, that I am reminded why I love shooting weddings so much. A wedding, just as the holidays, is a time when everyone is together... I love family dynamics ... no matter how unique, no matter how stressful at times ... ultimately there seems to always be a river of love that runs through the moment no matter how quiet or loud that river is.

To my family... I love you all... to those of you who made it this year and to those of you who did not (you were DEFINITELY missed)... I hope we will all be together next year.

May you all find joy in the people around you this holiday season . . .be them family by blood, by love, or by friendship!!

Michele & Jeff... a wedding with Holiday flare

The first week in December I photographed the lovely wedding between Michele and Jeff. It was the beginning of the season that is now upon us. The tables were covered with evergreens and red accents.

After watching this slide show you'll have to agree.. what warms my heart most about this couple... Michele's laughter and the obvious look of joy in Jeff's eyes as he watches his bride's pure happiness expressed. There were so many moments that evening of this love that it makes me tear up just thinking about it... (yet again).

To Michele & Jeff, wishing you the most magical holiday as you spend your first Christmas together. Thank you so much for allowing me to be a part of your special occasion.

Last night, as I am slowly adjusting to the weather I ventured outside the house at 8:00 p.m. for Lobsterfest 08... now one would wonder if Lobster... in the middle of winter... in Detroit... on a Monday is a good idea... does it really matter, we had fun. I got to visit with friends I hadn't seen in years. Isn't that what it's all about this season...

So I have officially survived Day 1 of Holiday Vacation 08... which I really shouldn't call a vacation don't get me wrong I love visiting with all my family and friends but a vacation should include relaxation, comfortable beds, a beach, and maybe some fruity drinks with an umbrella... but for what its worth I can't complain... I was met at the airport at 5:00 a.m. with Hot Coco and 2 smiling faces (even though they had just driven an hour in snow covered Detroit streets). Becky & Pete you two are ROCKSTARS!!!

I've flown into Detroit a million times but this was the first time I actually HEARD the ice and snow beneath the plane as we landed...

Then once I slept off my red eye, I looked around and was happy to see (from inside a warm home) a snow covered porch, lovely lights and a beautiful Christmas tree... ahhhhh the holidays have arrived (even if they are cold)... luckily I have mulled wine to keep me warm!

Michele & Jeff are married!!

This past weekend I had the great honor and soooo much fun photographing this wonderful couple's wedding. I met Michele and Jeff last spring in San Francisco and totally hit it off. I've been waiting for months to photograph this December wedding... what a wonderful way to ring in the holiday season. We started at the San Buena Ventura Mission for a beautiful ceremony then moved down the street to party it up at The Crowne Plaza!!

I have to say (and I think everyone in attendance would agree)... there was definitely a higher power taking care of the light... gorgeous and sunny in the morning, perfect overcast right after the ceremony (just in time for group shots), and then the clouds broke like magic into the MOST AMAZING sunset I have ever seen in California...

Michele & Jeff... thank you so much for allowing me to be a part of your special day. It has been so fun getting to know you over the last year. You two have such contagious smiles and laughter that light up a room. I can't wait to visit you up in SF this spring!! Congratulations!!

Engagement pics. . . a million uses...

I am so excited. Next September I am going to be shooting this wonderful couple in Mexico... I just love destination weddings... there is always this extra sense of vacation and relaxation thrown into the whole affair... always adding for an amazing party!! Everyone who is there is there because they want to be there!!

So, I did Elizabeth & Will's engagement shoot a few months ago (check out their slideshow to the right). They are so much fun I can't say enough great things about them... well, I just recieved their save the date in the mail... another reason I love them . . .they used one of the pics.

Which brings me to my point... I love Engagement shoots not only does a couple walk away with a ton of pics showing their different personalities from goofy, to casual, to the "I'm so in love I can't take my eyes off you look" BUT there are a million ways to use them throughout the year of wedding stuff... below is just a list of a few ideas... but there are plenty more and a million ways to be creative...

The Holiday Party...

Tuesday night I had the opportunity to attend this wonderful party. It was the 5th annual "Holiday Party" hosted by Armando of Alegria by Design. It was a fabulous party with a 1920's Hollywood Glamour theme held at the University Club here in SB.

What a wonderful idea. It was a party thrown by event professionals FOR event professionals. It was such a fun opportunity to reconnect with friends in the industry now that the wedding season is starting to slow down a bit . . . for some (I've got a great wedding coming up this weekend that I will for sure be blogging about next week). I'm constantly amazed by the support all of us industry peeps give each other... there is such a genuine sense of friendship. How lucky!

Who better to party with than professionals... and how often are WE the guests!

Brothers will be brothers...

So the other day I had the pleasure of shooting portraits of Derick and Miles. . .brothers through and through. One minute they were laughing with each other. . .the next they were putting each other in headlocks. Well, the pics are definitely candid... and captured their different personalities. Whether or not any of them Mom can use for a holiday card is up to them (I think so)... I did capture a couple quick ones here and there when they were smiling and looking like they loved each other... if nothing else it was fun to wander around the Santa Barbara Courthouse on a beautiful afternoon.

And Guys... remember beware of ledges without glass... this ain't Chicago!! Isn't mom a little daredevil!!

Another contest . . . PDN Top Knots

So, my whole goal of submitting to a magazine, competition, or contest every month has kind of been thrown out the window since summer. . .BUT , I'm back on it!! Today I submitted to a really cool competition that I am hoping to do well in (cross your fingers). PDN (PDN Top Knots)an awesome photo journal that focuses on fine art photography is holding a competition that will highlight how the new world of wedding photography is moving into a creative realm and pushing envelopes left and right. Two of the judges are from The Knot and The Wedding Library.

I'm really excited about this competition because its fun to see how photographers take one of the most traditional moments in a person's life and think outside the box to turn their images into true art!! How cool... I love seeing how other photogs put their own stamp of creativity on a moment.

Giving Thanks...

What a Thanksgiving!!! So, I have to say Thanksgiving is one of my favorite holidays. Even though I may not be able to spend it with my family as everyone is spread across the country... my friends become my family for the day. We each bring a our own unique family traditions to the table.

This year I spent it with 2 of my favorite girlfriends on earth and their families... it was 30 hours of relaxation, fun and adventure... from G cooking her first Turkey (honestly didn't think it was going to be pretty. . but damn girl you rocked that bird), picking apples, climbing trees (in heels no less), a mini pool competition, laughing about life, love, and the pursuit of happiness . . as girls usually do... and a break to bath the little ones before they went to bed... I must admit being that I have no children and am a photographer I love the idea that I was responsible for the pics that 15 years from now will haunt these children and cause many an embarrassing conversation in their teenage years. . . hee hee hee... the joys of being the girl with the camera.

Then Friday morning my mini holiday continued with horseback riding, playing with the kids... and then barrel tasting at the Koehle r Winery (one of the neighbors)... It was the perfect way to end Thanksgiving.

Imagine... a Thanksgiving with 3 dogs, 2 horses, 4 donkeys, 8 cows, 1 calf, and 1 ram... not to mention a yummy turkey, tons of food, 3 adorable little ones, and amazing friendship...

I am so Thankful... for all those in my life, my family (who is supportive, and loving beyond explanation).... my friends (who stick by my side on a daily basis no matter what) . . and all the new people I meet (who inspire me every day).

May you all realize the gifts of love around you!!

Thanksgiving shopping. . .and so it begins.

One little known secret about me. . . I LOVE to cook... (for Thanksgiving)... it's the one time during the year that I feel it appropriate to indulge in hours of recipe searching... trying new things, borrowing from relatives, and bringing family traditions to a table. My problem I can never decide what yummy dish to make... so I make them all... right now I'm up to 4 side dishes... possibly 5 (heck, you never know if one or two or four may not turn out to be edible).. I said I love to cook . . .not that I'm good at it!!

Now. . .I may love the cooking part ... but I can't stand the shopping part... its the only time of year where no matter what store you go to the same items are completely cleared out while the item next to it is untouched... blank empty spaces everywhere...
no mini marshmallows
no frenches crispy onions
no more whipped cream... (hope heavy cream is the same... ?!?!?!)

So last night I decided to hit the stores a bit early... over all it was okay... had my list in hand. . .and found everything but the whipping cream . .oh well . . . like I said I got 3 or 4 other dishes I can share.

Okay... so I HAD to pay props to my hometown football team... I swear up until now the only thing Ovid-Elsie High School was known for was the most snow days of the year... not anymore!

For the first time in history... my little known school is heading to the MHSAA State Championships at Ford Field

So way to go boys!!! I'll be cheering for you from a distance. Saturday 4:30pm Ford Field... you'll be doing a small town proud...

Just for the record... I went to state for girls tennis my senior year... I guess that's not the same, but hey I think my pic may still be up on the wall in the school lobby... maybe?!?!?!

Get Registered...

So I just wanted to share with you my new favorite thing I'm offering... okay so it's not so new... but I thought I would write about since I think it is soooo neat and very few people have taken advantage of it.

I always have a hard time knowing what to get a couple that's getting married. Being a part of the industry and also being a professional wedding guest (I've averaged 5-7 weddings a year for about 10 years now . . .NOT including the one's I shoot)... I know how important it is NOT to veer off the registry. Each Bride and Groom spend days stressing about what to register for and even though you may think it's boring and impersonal to get them one tea saucer in their set of 10 . . . remember that's what they want!!

So being the creative type. . . I always battle back and forth on how to buy a pretty, creative gift . . off the registry of plates, saucers, and bowls... well . . .here's the solution

Build a Registry...
It's a great way to register for all things offered by a vendor ... and in my case PHOTOGRAPHY. All I know is I would much rather give the gift of a photograph then a saucer (but that's just me)... I am a bit biased. So keep this in mind and ask your vendors about it

One last thing, I had a very close friend get married in a VERY small town in Mexico. I was so impressed and touched by the way her wedding came about that I always thought to myself... now this makes sense. Each family or guest would take a separate aspect of the wedding and "gift" it to the couple... one family would bake the cake, another would host it, another would help decorate . .. etc etc... In fact the most touching weddings I attend and shoot are those created by their family and friends.

If you think about it, a lot of couples these days already have everything they need for a home (or double that)... so this is a way to not only help with the cost of the wedding but also include a sense of love and giving to the entire event.

Just my thoughts on this rainy day in Santa Barbara
(which BTW makes me smile and want to curl up with a blanket and watch a good romantic comedy)

Rodrigo's Engagment...

As I eluded to yesterday . .I had the pleasure of taking part in the sweetest photo shoot. Rodrigo contacted me about 6 weeks ago and asked me to photograph the moment he proposed to his sweet Emily!! I of course jumped at the chance... how often do you get to have a front row seat to a moment like that...

But man I must admit I was a bit nervous ... you only get one chance to catch that moment ... I was shaking (seriously) ...partly because I was nervous for Rodrigo . . .and partly because I was nervous for myself... Do you know how hard it is to hold a 200 mm lens steady when you are excited and nervous and shaking all at the same time... luckily all went well . . SHE SAID YES. . . and the pictures turned out adorably sweet and touching.

A note to all you men out there... take a lesson from Rodrigo... notice the knee... the smiles... and of course the ring (nice job buddy.. and without any help no less) ... and how smart to hire a photographer to capture that once in a lifetime moment!!

Congratulations you two . . .I truly feel honored that you would allow me to share in that moment!!
I don't even have to ask how the rest of your weekend went. . . I'm sure you were both on cloud 9

My Birthday... 2nd Annual 30th... 1920's style

Okay... so during my one month hiatus from my blog last month . .I did have a lot going on.. but to be honest I've been waiting for friends to give me pics . . . guess that's what happens when the photographer leaves her camera at home for once...
So back in mid-October I celebrated my 2nd Annual 30th birthday... not because I have some issue with being 31 (that came the following week when I found my first grey hair-did I really just share that--yikes)... but because last year I threw a wonderful and amazing 30th Murder Mystery party on the island but seeing that it was on an island in northern Michigan most of my California family couldn't make it. SO this year I decided to do it again . . . only Cali style...

It was an awesome night of Murder Mystery and Mayhem ... with a lot of laughter thrown in. We had Chief Carl the cross dressing chief of police. .. Drama Tessa . . .actually Drama Kevin the very "manly" looking Flapper... there were gangs of mobsters. . . groups of scandalous flappers... all visiting . .. my ("Rosie Marie's") little known speakeasy... The Juice Joint

It was an amazing night that I will never forget... and will always hold dear to my heart... thank you to all of you who came!! (now send me those darn pictures) ;)

To all the people in my life... those that made it to the first round... and those who were there for the second annual... you all create my life... you support me, love me, help me. . . and even scold me when I need it. . . and for all these things I love you forever . .. you all make me who I am. And for that I am forever thankful!

The Knot Magazine...

Oh my goodness. . .I can't believe I forgot to mention that The Knot just recently contacted me and will be featuring one of my weddings "Sara & Dan" in one of their upcoming issues and on their website

I am sooo excited... I've always had The Knot as one of my goals. It's funny that the minute you reach one goal you take about a day to celebrate... WOOO HOOO... then it's on to the next. . . guess that's what keeps us all moving forward.

The spread will be featuring Sara and Dan. They are such an amazing couple. They were married this past July at the St. Anne's Church and the Inn at Stonecliffe on Mackinac. I'll let you know when it hits the newstands!!

Hope you are all having a beautiful weekend!! I know I am, 75 degrees and sunny... friends visiting from out of town... and an AWESOME and unique shoot today (just wait. .. you'll hear about it tomorrow)

Tea Fire Aftermath...

So one week ago the "Tea Fire" came barreling over the hills surrounding Santa Barbara.

I went out yesterday to shoot some of the devastation... what I realized... there is a reason I am a wedding photographer. I couldn't bring myself to shoot images of someone else's heartbreak... what right do I have to make art out of some else's pain when I can go home to my house which was untouched and my office (which was close . . .sooo close . . . 400 feet close) but still untouched. My heart ached for these neighbors as they stood in the middle of a pile of rubble which once was their home. I drove up one street and was shocked by the indiscriminate path the fire took... one house would be burned to the ground... and the next door neighbors' untouched.

I was also moved by the sense of camaraderie on the streets. . .as I stood on a eerily quite ledge photographing the canyon... a truck stopped and with a heavy heart asked what my relation to the fire was... turns out he had built most of the homes in the area and was driving to see how many were detstroyed... his eyes teared up as he told me his very favorite was now just a chimney and ash. As I drove down a street that was once a normal neighborhood I saw people helping out everywhere. . .I saw a group of kids sitting on a sidewalk taking a break from helping a teacher pick up the pieces. It was these images that I couldn't photograph but will forever be etched in my mind.

I think yesterday just solidified more that I will stick to the happy moments in peoples' lives. . . the joy, the laughter, the moments that people really want to have captured. The images that in times of sorrow can serve as a reminder of what's important in life... the joy they once felt and will most likely feel again.

Tea Fire...

So, I know . . . again I have been a slacker with the blogging but it's been one of those times when it's been insanely crazy and yet not at the same time (and to be honest I have had complete writers block)... But the last couple days have been a little different. For those of you that haven't heard we've been having a wildfire burn across Santa Barbara. Luckily now it seems to be contained... but for a little bit there it was definitely touch and go.

Thursday night around 6pm I was getting ready to leave my office in Montecito and walked out to a wall of flames. I must say, being a mid-west girl with lack of fire knowledge except for "stop drop and roll", I had NEVER experienced such a thing. To make a long story short, after a very long and somewhat emotional night of being glued to a friends TV (our power was out)... I was sure the office was gone along with a very close friend's home. At that point I felt such sadness and emotion for a place that was not even mine that I couldn't imagine what the 100's of people who have lost their homes must be going through right now.... or even worse for those that still don't know if their house is standing.

Luckily as the smoke cleared Friday morning, my office and friend's place was still standing. That day I became a little rebellious and cross the evacuation line to stand on the roof in the heart of the evacutation zone to try and capture what was occuring. My pictures don't due justice. I did however capture the helicopters and fire crew dropping water in preparation for what could have been another long night. It was quite surreal to be so close to such destruction.

I realize that this was not the largest fire this year, but it was the closest to my heart and I can now truely understand the rollercoaster of emations and thoughts that can run through one's mind in such a time.

To all those who have lost their homes my heart truly goes out to you... and to all the firefighters, and police... you have been doing an AMAZING job. I am so proud of our community and the emergency system they have in place.

I have truly had my eyes opened to the indiscriminate power of this type of disaster.

May all of you be safe and happy . . . and appreciative for everything and everyone you have in your lives. . . I know I am today!!

A Dream Destination...

It was an amazing weekend. The M.I. Tourism Bureau held it's 3rd annual Dream Destination Wedding Weekend. This is unlike any wedding expo. It gives each couple the opportunity to see every venue for themselves and meet every vendor face to face. How many destination locations offer that as an option? It makes planning a destination wedding so much easier.

I had such a blast... I met so many amazing people. I hope they all make it back to the island for their weddings. I get so stoked talking about wedding photography . . .that I may have talked a few people's ears off. . .Well, At least they got these cute little boxes that contained a Mackinac photo book I made & personalized mm's how cool is that... check it out anyone can do it... my m&m's

Registration took place at Mission Church . . . just check this pic out. . . . how cool does it look all lit up at night... so fallish ... the church is so historic that it doesn't have any electric lights inside, so they brought in construction lights to light it for the event... (not to mention in the daylight it is a GORGEOUS place to get married)

Thanks to all the brides, grooms, families, friends and vendors for attending this year. . . and a very special thank you to the tourism bureau for doing such an amazing job at putting it all together!!

Amy & Michael... An International Love Affair

Well, I must say this was one of the hardest couple to keep track of. . . I met Amy and Michael last year at the Dream Destination Wedding Weekend on Mackinac (location #1)... then we chatted and discovered we lived just a few hours away in Cali (location #2) . . . as we spoke more, I discovered Michael is from Australia. . .and they split their time there as well (location #3) . . .and now the kicker. . . over the past year as the three of us would email back and forth I came to realize that most of the time they were in Asia (location #4) . . pheewww. . .and I thought I traveled a lot...

And that was just the beginning. . . I could go on for hours about this couple, their wedding, their guests. . . everything... but I'll try and keep it short... To sum it up Amy and Michael along with Cameron and Matthew ("the boys") ... truly created an amazing family. I feel blessed to have been such a part of it.

As you can tell I love details, . . but when the details are meaningful and closely connected to the heart as they were that day... the love shines through even brighter (and I get even more teary eyed). Amy and Michael used this beautiful day to honor not only each other but their families, their friends, their ancestors and their traditions. It was truly inspiring!

Stephanie & Peter. . . A "Grand" Escape

I wrote about this couple a few weeks ago. . .her shoes. . . his food .. . their smiles...

And now I am going back through looking at the pics for one last final edit and it just reminds me again of how cute Stephanie and Peter were... from the outside they were elegant and "adult" . . . but then you can look closer and see the childlike glimmer in their eyes as they looked at each other. WOW . . .what a weekend...

This weekend is just about over . . it's 11:59 p.m Sunday night and before I go to bed I just had to write one last thing. I was debating about writing because I really have no images to show off the last two days... just my thoughts and vivid descriptions...

So, here we go... I woke up Saturday morning and read a line in a book that has stuck with me...

"If you want to experience the miraculous, start to look for the miraculous in everything."
(Alice Inoue... A Loving Guide to These Shifting Times)

I got out of bed went for a run . . and kept this idea in mind. . . I noticed the sunlight shine through and burst between a row of eucalyptus trees

. . . then a few hours later, I noticed a beautiful little girl sitting on a park bench wearing a bright yellow shirt with a yellow bow in her hair this yellow matched perfectly her laughter and smile that shined like the sun...

It was like this all day long. . . a person, a flower, a song,

...and the way the day ended was the biggest miracle of all... I was standing in the middle of a horse coral with 4 of my dearest friends looking up at the night sky.
The stars were unlike anything I've ever seen before (which says a lot since I grew up in the country in Michigan where the Northern Lights were a common occurance) ... the milky way was as clear as day... the only noise we could here were two owls talking to each other from separate trees. . . then as we silently stared up looking for constellations . . .not 1 . . .not 2 . . .but THREE shooting stars flew across the sky!!

May you all SEE the miraculous things that happen around you everyday!!

First day of Fall...

I just returned from a quick 3 day trip to Mackinac. September really is the BEST time to be there in my opinion. It's still sunny but with a bit a crispness in the air, the leaves are changing colors, the streets are quieter, and everyone just seems to be in a wonderful mood. There's something magical about biking through the tall trees with the blue sky above and the sight of little leaves slowly making their way down to the ground and speckling the pavement with splotches of color... Yesterday I was on my bike with a scarf wrapped around my neck flying down a hill like a little girl... tears welling up in my eyes partly because of the cold breeze . . but mostly because of the pure joy I felt in that moment...

Melissa & Andrew... Power of two

There is ONE thing that stands out to me with this sweet couple. POWER OF TWO...

I met Melissa and Andrew a year ago at the Destination Dream Wedding Weekend on Mackinac, since then we've been emailing and chatting every month. I spent a little bit of time with each of them before the event all the while trying to get a feel for this couple and their wedding... but it wasn't until the moment Andrew's eyes gazed upon Melissa on the Stonecliffe porch and Melissa saw Andrew waiting for her at the end of the aisle that I instantly understood.

There wasn't a sense of excitement, or overt celebration... there was a sense of confidence, a sense of relaxation in the midst of chaos, a sense that these two were the only two in the world and together they could face anything. Together they are one, together they are each other's pillars of strength.

After the ceremony, Melissa and Andrew went on a private carriage ride... after spending most of the day apart... they were finally together... not just for the moment but for a lifetime.

M & A . . . you two truly are an example of the power of two . . . may you face the world together with the same sense of confidence and joy that radiated out the minute your hands touched at the end of the aisle.

Strange title for a blog . . .I know... but these are the 4 words I would use to describe this amazing couple's wedding.

and their Smiles. . . Stephanie and Peter at first glance are a couple who exude a sense of grace and elegance... then the minute their smiles show they look like two kids... you can't help but see it...

Exciting stuff from Mackinac . .. Publication & Representation

So I must apologize for being off the radar for the past week. I just returned from an awesome trip to the island. Not only did it include two amazing weddings (stay tuned pics will be up shortly), beautiful fall weather, and winning the football pool... that was a first (must have been beginners luck)

. . . but I had not one but two exciting new things happen in regards to my more fine art island photography.

1) Thanks to the work I did for the Mackinac Island Tourism Bureau last year I was published in a new national magazine that is incredibly beautiful called Flower Magazine . . . take a look below
and
2) I just found out that I am going to be represented next year by an art gallery on the Island called Victorian Summer Gallery. They will be hanging a collection of my more fine art Mackinac images. So if your ever on the island check that place out to see some of my other Mackinac stuff.

One last little note . . . Ahhhh, ... how I love fall on the island. Things start to slow down, the leaves start to change and the air feels so clean and crisp... nothing can compare... it always energizes me for the next step.

Santa Barbara Get Away Engagement ... Kerry & Adrian

So about a month I got a request for an engagement shoot from the nicest bride-to-be from Arizona. She wanted to surprise her fiance with a photo shoot of the two of them while they were out here for the weekend... granted she told him the minute she got off the phone with me... well, so the surprise didn't work out, but the photos sure did... and I must say it was one of the most beautiful days we've had all summer . . . funny enough we shot it on the last day of summer Labor Day...

Now, about Kerry & Adrian. . .all I can say is one word . . .LAUGHTER . . . they would not stop giggling and laughing and smiling, I must say there is definitely something about people in love, its contagious and glows right through the images. Just take a look...

I decided that after being on my computer all weekend it was time for a little sun in the valley... Santa Ynez. If you haven't noticed it's my favorite place to go escape for just a little bit.

So I was off in my newly washed car (and if you know me well you know what a miracle that is) . . . with the windows down, wind blowing, 90 degree weather . . and country music blaring... I'm a seasonal country listener... when it's sunny and I'm driving into the country its perfect. . . there is a time and place for everything!!

This jaunt into the valley was meant to be for jam making. . .yup . . .what better to do on a ranch than attempt to make homemade jam with two of your best girlfriends... granted I was just around for the picking of the berries. . . my computer called long before the jarring began.

Hey girls. .. I still expect to get some of that jam!!!

May you all find time for those needed breaks from reality to just sit back relax. . . and pick berries!!

Mackinac Photographers Unite!!!

This weekend is going to be an awesome time to be on Mackinac (I only wish I was there) ... not only is it August, with sunny gorgeous weather for all the usual fun island things to do BUT it is also the 4th Annual Mackinac Island Fudge Festival (complete with Willie Wonka golden ticket contest, a photo exhibition, and of course a lot of fudgie activities).

As part of the festival, for the first time, there is going to be an open air exhibition of island photographers and their more creative works of art. Although I won't be able to be there in person a few of my favorite island images from this past winter will be there---A little bit of cold underneath the hot summer sun.

Saturday, August 23rd
4pm-6pm Art in the Park: A Photographer’s Exhibition-Mackinac Island is home to many award winning photographers. This exhibition is the first of its kind and will take place at Windermere Point with the award winning bluegrass band: Lonesome County, who have been hailed as one of the most diverse and powerful bands in the country.

If you are going to be on the island please swing by, take a look, and support all these amazing photographers. Since it is an exhibition, none of the works of art will be for sale, but if you are interested in any of these 10 x 20 gallery wraps please let me know.

The camera turns on us...

So Nick's mom (of Daphne & Nick) . . .turned her camera on Brion and me a couple weeks ago . . . thought I'd share the pic... (man, what a fun wedding . . even if the waves were splashing over the break wall onto the cocktail reception . . . see how wet the walkway is in the background)

Just got off the red eye from Hawaii... wow those beaches are amazing. .. I can't wait to go back and explore more...

but for now ...must get sleep . . . must close eyes ... just for ... one minute... zzzzzz

Well, last night I arrived at LAX at 10 pm ready to board yet another late night flight... although this time instead of heading east I headed west . . .

So at 2am when I landed... blurry eyed and tired I look outside . . . wait . .did they go the wrong way . . did I get my trips confused . . . it looks just like Detroit... it's funny how airports in the middle of the night really all do look exactly the same (how else could you explain a Detroit-Hawaii confusion)

Ahhhh . . but when I awoke just 5 hours later (thank you jet lag) and went for a walk on the beach . . . I realized. . .nope, it's a little different! (thank you iphone . . music & camera all in one)

Aloha . . .welcome to Hawaii . .. my first time here, I can't believe it and am sooo excited ... I've never seen anything like it. . .

and to be here... to shoot one of my best friends' wedding ... to the most amazing girl ever... on a Hawaiian beach. . . wow!!

Daphne & Nick: The slideshow

Just a quick thought about this wedding: It was an event of such sweetness. It echoed the joy and love that you can't help but see in the glances between Nick & Daphne. Plus those smiles and laughs... just check them out!!!

So I mentioned that a couple weeks ago I shot a very special wedding. Not only was this the wedding of my pseudo little brother (his sis is my best friend from college) but it was also an amazing example of how you can plan an amazing and touching event long distance with the help of friends and wonderful vendors. Daphne & Nick live out of town and over the past 6 months (with the help of their sister and friends) threw together a beautiful beach side affair.

That's what I think of when I think of Sara and Dan . . .there were so many smiles, laughter and jokes yet a tenderness that was unable to be hidden.

And of course as I biked away from the reception, leaving the two of them to dance the rest of the night... a double rainbow appeared in the sky and stretched across the entire island... (hence the reason I HAD to use this song)

My heart warms every time I view these pics. I'm so glad I was able to shoot this wedding and meet Sara and Dan... I just know we'll stay friends...

Say it three times and it brings you good luck and happiness forever . . . okay, maybe I'm making that up, but it is a fun word to say once you get used to it. And now you must be wondering what the heck a Waugoshance is, is it a monster found in the deep forests of Northern Michigan? (close but not quite) . . . is it a tiny little instrument used to lead the way? (getting closer, but not so tiny)...

Well, it is a Magical Lighthouse found that acts as the western gate to the Straights of Mackinac in Northern Michigan... it's history is legendary (ghosts, WWII bombing target, and more, yet it still stands)... due to technology it is being threatened to become extinct. My good friend Chris is helping to save this lighthouse. I had the pleasure when I was back on Mackinac to shoot it from that tiny little plane as the boats went by... now that I've seen it from the air, and read about it's sweet history I can't wait to go visit it up close . . .and maybe even get a glimpse of the ghost...

Daphne & Nick . . . A Palm Tree Paradise and a little brother...

First let me just explain this couple in my eyes. . .

Nick: The little brother I never asked for but am so glad I've discovered (he's my best friend's little bro therefore he's my bro too by association and ten years of history. . . )

Daphne: The beautiful, warm, and extremely intelligent woman that has melted his heart and caused that big huge grin all over his face . . . I love her for that

I knew Nick long before Daphne came into the picture, and I've only known her for a short amount of time... but in that time, it is clear to see that these two truly complete each other. They compliment each others' differences and enhance each others' likenesses. If ever a couple exemplified what it means to complement each other it's Nick and Daphne. With all the craziness of the wedding spinning around them the minute the two were insight of each other there was an instant sense of calmness and peace. You couldn't help but see the softness appear in both of their eyes.

Nick and Daphne, I am so incredibly happy for the two of you from the bottom of my heart. I am so glad to see the joy in both of you and to have gained a new sister...

My Midwest Nostaligia ... and tractors!!

I apologize in advance for how long winded this may be but it's been quite a 48 hours and I'm feeling a need to give props . . . (above pic: for those of you west of Ovid... my childhood driveway)

So, I'm not sure if I'm feeling overly nostalgic, emotional . . or just extremely sleep deprived (probably a mix) . . . but this past weekend truly made me feel blessed for the rainbow of people who have and are continuing to show up in my life. Not only am I continuing to meet amazing people with every event I shoot but I continue to have amazing people support me along the way, whether they came along my journey at the age of 10, 18, 25, or 30... this weekend I felt them all...

I came to fall in love with my friends from back home all over again.. be them from grade school, high school, or college... seeing these people I hadn't seen in over ten years.. and bonding as if no time had passed... I saw how we have all changed, and grown . . yet when it comes down to the root of it all... we are all the same and will no matter what have roots in each others lives... I have no doubt that no matter how much time passes, how many miles separate us, we will all be there for each other (this wedding showed me that). The strength of the small communities born in the Midwest is indescribable and have helped me become the person I am today.

It all started at Brownies Diner outside Detroit at 5am where one of my best friends from college drove 40 minutes to meet me (at 5am on a Saturday . . . wow, she must still like me) ..if you are looking for Flo from the 80's TV show Alice I found her...

Then the wedding . . . me as a bridesmaid at a childhood friend's wedding. . . a perfect mix of elegance with a hometown family community bbq . . . and hunting?!?!? (didn't think it was possible) . . . but somehow Jamie pulled it off... she and her parents drove up on the back of a tractor to cross the covered bridge her grandfather had built for her grandmother to begin the ceremony (that's where the tears started flowing) . . . then after that all 500 guests reconvened at the Oakley tractor club (yes... tractors) where the pavilion was beautifully decorated with gold silks, cat tales, wheat stalks, pine cones and . . . animal calls..duck, deer... you name it... oh and how could I forget the camo vests and flip flops... I loved it!!!

It's amazing how when you are away from home for so long the everyday things you saw growing up can all of a sudden become so unique (like barrels of hay . . don't laugh . . it's true)... I shot this pic because I thought "oh, how cool, look at all the hay rolled up in the corn fields".. my high school buddies couldn't hold back their laughter and just rolled their eyes... somethings never change "You never did know much about farming . . . you don't usually see HAY in CORN fields..."

After Saturday night's late night (early morning) catch up session at the "Little Bar" with High School friends... I was up and on my way to the airport... but not before two more stops to visit one of my best friends from childhood and her adorable little ones and then on to lunch with my "second parents" who have been there for me beyond explanation.

AND THEN . . .you would think it would end there. . .but nope... once I landed at LAX, I happened to get a hold of two friends from college... and we met up for an awesome dinner filled with laughter and sushi before heading back to SB and finally passing out from exhaustion...

One last thought . . . and this may be cheesy but it's true, the night before I left for this weekend; Sweet Home Alabama was on TV ... and there was a line I haven't been able to get out of my head... "You can have roots and wings too", that's exactly how I feel...

May you all rediscover and appreciate the roots that have made you who you are and continue to grow wings along your way...

Melissa & Andrew: The Slideshow and more

So as I had mentioned a few weeks ago, I ventured to a whole new island in Northern Michigan, Drummond Island ... this one with cars (that completely threw me off). Melissa and Andrew found me off the Mackinac Island Tourism Bureau website... and I'm so happy they did.

It was truly a magical weekend, the sun broke through for a beautiful day and cast amazing streams of light through the tall trees as Melissa & Andy said I do!!

And away I go . . . Again

But THIS time. . . I am flying light. All I need is my dress (which is already there), and travel clothes (I'll only be there 24 hours . . yikes!!!)... and my laptop of course.

Off to my hometown of Ovid, for a hometown wedding. My dear friend is getting married tomorrow. . . and guess who's a bridesmaid . . .yup, ME! I'm even leaving my camera behind (don't worry I'll have my point and shoot to document). And to top it off it's a themed wedding... or so I hear, the guys are wearing hunting camo tuxedo vests. . . should be quite an affair. I have a feeling the whole town will be there...

I'm not sure what I'm most excited about, the wedding or flying without having to check luggage!!!

"Dialed In" . . . Sara & Dan

In honor of my brand new friends. . . Sara & Dan (my couple with amazing teeth from last weekend... as they should they met in dental school) . . . I am "dialed in" . . . to everything

So I came to notice as the day went by that "dialed in" was the saying of the day.. . everything was dialed in this... dialed in that ... as Dan said at one point "Sara is definitely dialed in ... with a look of amazement, awe and pure joy he laughed into her eyes...

I was starting to get "dialed in" myself . . . until I heard them use it in a context that threw me off... "this storm is dialed in for sure" (i thought dialed in was a good thing,this storm not such a good thing) . . . I finally said (with a true Princess Bride reference). . .I do not think that word means what you think it means. . . (ala Inigo Montoya) they picked up instantly and started laughing and explained "Dialed in" to me in all it's references and terms...

(BTW there was so many laughters and smiles this day that my stomach was sore the next... along with my legs from biking 8 miles to keep up with them around the island...note to self must train better for next island wedding)

Hey Sara & Dan . . . Your California photo girl from OE is officially "dialed in" . .and takin' it cross country... You two are awesome! I had such a blast with you guys. And the double rainbow at the end of your beautiful day was just as rare and amazing as the two of you. Thank you so much for inviting me to be a part of your wedding!!
I can't wait to keep in touch and hear how everything is dialed in from here on out...

The island follows me home. . .

I just had to write about this... so I am sitting at my desk this morning. . . and in walks a friend and throws the paper at me... you and that island . . .

Now, look closely .. . yup the LA Times . . yippeee (now my Cali friends will believe that this magical place really does exist)

This past Sunday the Times did a cover story for their travel section on the island. Guess I'm not the only girl in California who loves this place!! I knew it was just a matter of time before Mackinac Fever would be sweeping the nation.

You know your in Michigan when...

So I am now back home in Santa Barbara after ten days in Northern Michigan (my island of course... Mackinac)that included too much to talk about ...so here's just a list and a few pics...

Just a quick overview of my trip...
Over 400 yachts invading Mackinac (100th Anniversary of the Chicago to Mac Race)
2 AMAZING weddings
Fireworks
Several Power outages
Lightening Storms
Gorgeous Rainbows
Sunny days on boats (I just noticed a lot about weather. . . figures that's Michigan)
Biking 8 miles DURING a wedding
Exploring new islands (Drummond) and wedding locations
Shooting one of my favorite hotels (Iroquois Hotel)
A drive over the Mighty Mac (Mackinac Bridge)
A fly over the Mighty Mac (shooting aerial shots... in a very very small plane)
Meeting new people
And spending time with old friends and plenty more...

Marisa & Nic (part 2): Here's the slideshow

So a little over a week ago as I had mentioned I was in Santa Ynez shooting an Amazing wedding at the Firestone Crossroads Vineyard. Marisa and Nic did such an amazing job with every single detail. They had such a great group of people making their dream vision a reality.

Their planner: Robin Sonner (is AWESOME . . . I can't wait to work with you again)

The food: Pure Joy (amazing . . . and incredibly yummy . . . can't wait till this weekend) (and isn't that just the best darn name ever)

The Flowers: Kaleidoscope (simple, elegant, perfection)

And of course . . . my amazing second shooter (once again) Brion Hopkins (you rock as always)!!

M & N . . you know how much I love you two . . .can't wait to hear all about your honeymoon . . . enjoy this little tid bit of pics . . .

Melissa & Andrew: Tears of Joy, Laughter . .and just about everything..

Did my mascara run . . .oh shoot . . . occupational hazard. . .but who would of thought this bride and groom (and all of their guests) would bring me to tears ... I had only just met Melissa and Andrew the night before and yet still as she stood beautifully sillouetted by the tall Michigan trees and her hansome groom gripped her hand as she said her vows . . . tears started flowing down my face . . . (and hers . . . and their guests . . .and even a few groomsmen were biting their lips to hold back their emotions).

I have never witnessed such a tender ceremony that brought so many to tears. Although I may not have known the couple for long or their friends and family, it was impossible not to feel the love and happiness that surrounded Melissa & Andrew. It was truly beautiful, as if the entire chapel secluded by woods, decorated by two simple ferns and an unimaginable amount of natural beauty was glowing not only by the rays of sunlight peaking through the trees but the love that these two obviously have for each other.
Oh . . . and it wasn't long before these tears of joy and tenderness turned into joys of extreme laughter as these peeps hit the dance floor. . .

Well, it's now almost 1 am (geez I am starting to forget the days when I went to bed at a decent hour). . . I've been packing (or should I say repacking over and over) now for almost 3 hours. . .I guess I have a tendency to over pack . . .but cut a girl some slack . .I'm going to an island with no cars in the middle of Northern Michigan to shoot 2 weddings, yacht races and a hotel . . . plus meetings, bike riding, horseback riding. . .and who knows what else. . . I must plan for everything. . .

So that said. . .there is my luggage (falling forward due to the wieght... I hope the people at the airport are friendly) ... and that doesn't even include my camera equipment... wish me luck through security... ;)

Off to my little piece of island heaven...

(don't worry I'll still be around . . . I have lots to blog about my last couple shoots still)
